The Crop Insurance Cycle

  1. Application/Sales Closing Date

All applications must be on filled out and signed by the applicable sales closing date (SCD). These dates vary by crop, region, etc. The most common SCD’s are 3/15 and 9/30 for annually planted crops. All changes to existing policies, plans and coverages must also be made by the SCD.

4. Claims/Notice of Loss

Damage to a crop must be reported to an agent within 72 hours of discovery of the damage or no later than 15 days after the End of the Insurance Period (EOIP) which is the earliest of:

Total destruction of the insured crop on the unit

  • Harvest of the unit

  • Final adjustment of a loss unit

  • The calendar date contained in the provisions

  • Abandonment of the crop; or

  • As otherwise specified in the crop provisions

2. Production Reporting

A production report is a written record proving the insured’s annual production used to determine the yields for insurance purposes. It contains yield information for previous years, including planted acreage and harvested production. Production Reporting is used to calculate approved APH yields for the current crop year. The Production Reporting Date (PRD) is the earlier of the acreage reporting date or 45 calendar days after the earliest cancellation date for the crop for the current crop year, unless otherwise stated in the Special Provisions.

Fall Acreage Reporting

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

3. Acreage Reporting

After planting, you must provide information regarding the crops planted to your agent by the Acreage Reporting Date (ARD). This report is used by the insurance provider to establish the amount of coverage and premium for the crop.

The acreage report for the crop includes:

  • The crop planted

  • All planted acres (insurable, uninsurable and late planted)

  • Practice and type of the crop

  • Any acreage you were unable to plant (prevented planting acreage)

  • Date of planting

  • Insurable share for that acreage and any applicable shareholders
